Sage
says This bag was a custom order. So the check comes
in the mail and, having only eight dollars in my wallet, I
run off to the bank and say, Will you cash this please? The
teller looks suspicious. Woman in a crewcut equals crook.
Not only that, the name on the check isn't my legal one. I
smile simperingly. She wanders off and comes back looking
stern and has a whispered consultation with another teller.
Finally, she turns to me. We can't cash this check for you,
she says. It is from Pennsylvania. I nod as if I understand.
And you only have thirty seven cents in your account. I am
getting crabby. That's the POINT, I tell her, I need that
money so that I can buy FOOD. I'm so sorry, she says, but
you can't have this money for at least three days. So I spend
the eight dollars on onions and peppers and tortillas and
butter and have a delicious dinner of refried beans and consider
changing my bank.
