Another Wild New Year’s Eve

I’ve never been a proponent of the whole “my kid watches tv, so keep it G rated” controversy. If you don’t like what’s on tv, turn it off. If your kid watches tv when you’re not home, throw it out the nearest window, preferably a two-story one.

However, when Paul and I arrived at the local video store to find that the owner had taped the Freddy Vs. Jason poster on the glass door, at exactly the level of a young child’s eyes I was pissed off. It was literally unavoidable, unless the child in question closed his eyes and ran past it, which is what I encouraged Paul to do after he caught a glimpse of it and it scared him. We returned our videos and did the same coming outside of the store. The next time I went to the video store, I went by myself, and said politely to the owner, “You know, that poster really scared my little boy. With it on the door like that, it’s impossible for him to avoid it. There may be other kids who are frightened too.”

The owner nodded and smiled and said, “Oh really?” and “Hm,” and didn’t take the poster down. So I stopped going to her shop, which left me with the meagre fare at the grocery store (when the first Harry Potter video came out, they put up a big sign which read, “We will not be stocking the Harry Potter movie as we disapprove of the content,” so you can imagine what kind of selection they do have) and yesterday when I was already tired by four p.m. I decided to take Paul to Wal-Mart and actually buy a DVD or two. At least they carry Harry Potter.

We arrived and found two movies I could live with right off, The Wizard of Oz and The Neverending Story. At the counter, I looked at the clerk and thought, “Oooo. Priddy. You belong in Connecticut.”

Blane the Clerk Hey, I haven’t seen that movie for years.

Sage Which one?

Blane the Clerk The Neverending Story. It’s good, though.

Sage Did you see it in a theater?

Blane the Clerk I can’t remember. When did it come out?

Sage I was in elementary school…

Blane the Clerk, looking at the case Oh, 1984. I wasn’t even born then.

Ew. Ew.
