Subway Music

[Sage’s note: A subway musician. I put a coin in his violin case, then asked if I could take his photo. He hesitated for a moment, like, “You know and I know that you just paid me to take my photo,” but he nodded anyway. Oh, and never mind about the camera.] Click on the photo for sounds.
Submitted entry: There is something about seeing subway musicians that I find somewhatmoving. I think in a way it is because for a time, anyway, I was a subwaymusician in my own right. Though I never played a note on this site, I wasfrequently seen here playing my own tune - a seductively bittersweet tune about making one’s own joy. Iplayed this tune for you, dear readers, but at the same time I loved thesound of my own music. Sometimes people would criticise, other times theywould drop me a coin in the form of an email or postal package. Mostly, though, I would see them hustle their way to work and smile to myself, knowing I had given them something to think about as they went on with theirdays. And while from time to time I miss it, I now experience it daily fromthe other side.
