Kale

Click: images that capture the imagination.

I saw two pretty Mormon boys having a fight. One sat at the back of the bus, chatting cheerfully to the passengers, while the other sat far away, scowling and reading The Book of Mormon. When their stop came, one jostled the other, hard, getting off, and then they walked on, the chatty one a full four feet behind the reading one. I had my own ideas about why they were fighting, but that’s because I recently watched the film Latter Days. I mean, they probably weren’t fighting secret, burning love for each other at all.

I was waiting for my food at a health food cafe. A young woman came in and ordered a veggie smoothie.

Clerk Aw, sorry. We’re out of spinach.

Woman Oh…

Clerk I can put in extra kale -

Woman Oh, stellar!

Clerk Great.

There was a long silence, then -

Woman I never in my wildest dreams thought I’d ever go, “Extra kale, STELLAR!”

Paul and I were walking down the sidewalk.

Paul Can we buy a bagel, Mama?

Sage Nope.

Paul Why?

Sage We’re too broke.

Paul Well, can we buy a bagel?

Sage What does broke mean on your planet?

Paul It means we can have a bagel.

Sage, in a Cockney accent Broke means not a dollar, not a cent, not a penny -

Paul Not an accent either.

I dreamed that sometimes I went and recorded this show in a large all glass triangular bus shelter, because I liked watching the city around me as I recorded. One night, it was raining hard and I went to the bus shelter and just sat there listening to the rain and looking outside at the cars whizzing by. A woman came into the door and struggled inside, holding a chair and a portable cassette player. She began to set up the chair, and soon afterwards a young man came in and they exchanged names. (Her last name was McKnit.)

They were both listeners, and had come to the bus shelter to hear to the latest show, and decided to listen together. Unseen until then, I stood up and said goodbye to them both, and walked out into the rain, grinning.

Then evil bunnies and mice and kittens started biting people, who went mad, and all civilization disappeared, but up until that point…nice dream.
