So I was recently invited to join a book club. I am… not the book club type. But when I read Girls Fall Down by Maggie Helwig I immediately ordered my friend Jonathan to read it as well. Which he did, and then he said, “I read the book you -”

And I hollered, “No! No! Don’t say anything! I don’t want to know if you didn’t like it!”

“But -”

“Shhhh!” I said, stomping my foot.

“Ohhh! I get why you don’t want to go to the book club,” he said, laughing. “Because you HAVE a book club already. It’s called: Read This Book, And Then Say I Loved It or be Silent.”

Which… okay. He’s right. Now, Jonathan did get to say, finally, that he really liked Girls Fall Down. That’s all he got to say, but he did get to say it. And now YOU can be part of my book club too!

Because I’ve gotten permission from Coach House Books to read you the first chapter. And once you’ve heard the first chapter, you will go out and buy a copy, yes? Yes. Then you may write and tell me how much you loved it.

Frozen: Based on a True Story

QN episodes appear every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Keep up to date on ways to participate by joining the Facebook QN page.

On Saturday I went to see the new movie Frozen. Here is the plot of Frozen: three spoiled rich American kids go skiing and get stranded on a chairlift fifty feet in the air. Everyone else goes home. The ski lodge is closed for the next seven days. Aaaand: go. What most people don’t know is that Frozen is based on a true story. I mean, they made a bunch of changes to the original. English grown-ups on a ski vacation in Switzerland isn’t going to bring in the young, hip demographic. But I imagine the original went something like… this.

So a bunch of members of the Westboro Baptist Church – you remember them, they’re the ones who run the site God Hates Ireland. And the ones who picketed an appliance store because it sold gay-loving Swedish vaccuum cleaners. And after a tornado killed four Boy Scouts, they went to the funeral with signs about how happy they were?

You remember them. They’re FUCKING EVIL.

Anyway, a bunch of members of the Westboro Baptist Church show up to protest outside the San Francisco headquarters of Twitter…
